Disturbing Noise

On Tuesday, January 03, 2006 a Bengali newspaper organized their fortieth anniversary celebrations at the Centenary Auditorium of the University of Calcutta College Street campus. Bengali songs extolling mankind and creation were sung to increase the enjoyment quotient of the occasion. So far so good. But the songs were amplified manifold by using loudspeakers in the open inside the campus itself. This was a gross injustice to the students. Better sense was expected of the politically-backed news medium and the University administrators.
