All For Education
Kudos to St. Xavier's College for being the first college in West Bengal to achieve autonomy. It is a positive move on the part of the University Grants Commission (UGC) to allow autonomy to the institution for an initial period of six years. Constant evaluation by the apex higher education body of the country is supposed to keep the College on its toes and strive best to retain its autonomy. The precedent set by the St. Xavier's College should encourage other colleges in the State to strive for gaining autonomy. The UGC should consider mooting a proposal to form another university to lessen the number of affiliated colleges under the University of Calcutta (CU), for improving its scope for providing better service to the education fraternity.
