Stick For Students

The late-night police crackdown on the fasting Jadavpur University students was inhuman. In any case, the students were fasting peacefully. They were physically too weak to resist the assault from the duty-bound protectors of law. Thanks to its obstinate top-bosses, the University, otherwise respected for its smooth workings, apart from its steady outflow of brilliant professionals, is only tarnishing its reputation during its golden jubilee celebrations. It is a pathetic irony that such police atrocities, that too avoiding the citizens' eyes, late into the night, are taking place in the State Legislative Constituency of Chief Minister, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, who also happens to be the Police Minister.
