Left Out
That Indian sports is a worshipper of glamour is no new thing. Of course, the most important thing to get the limelight is performance. But once that has been secured with or without consistency, the next thing t that drives sports in the country is glamour. This has been seen time and again with cricket. Now, Sania Mirza's performance this year has been encouraging. She is getting the mileage not just because of her looks and attire, but also, and most importantly, for her onfield performance. But then again, Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupati have actually won a number of Grand Slams thus far. But the spotlight is never cast on them to the extent the same is being done for Sania for her run with the racket this year. The issue is not why Sania is hyped. It is always good, and necessary, to encourage a sportperson do continue to deliver the goods, and actually improve on every outing. But then, why a Koneru Humpy is being left out? How on earth does the Chief Minister of her homestate forget to make mention of her, especially when he is all praise for another contemporary, and current, sporting star of the state, Sania Mirza? In fact, chess is one of the few games in which India is performing well for quite some time together now. It has been a gross injustice on the part of the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister to deny Humpy the encouraging adulation she deserves.
