Burning Desire

The idea of packaging Sati sites in Rajasthan as tourist spots is detrimental to the interests of an otherwise progressive society like that of India. Sati is both anti-social and illegal. Such state-sponsorship of this inhuman practice is uncalled-for - more so because the practice of Sati and its glorification in any manner have been categorically denounced by the Commission of Sati(Prevention) Act, 1987. One wonders how Ms. Vasundhara Raje Scindia, the Chief Minister of the state could put forward such a regressive and anti-constitutional plan. The first woman Chief Minister of the state seems to be looking to root out social upliftment in general, and women's emancipation, in particular, from the state.
