Struggle For Supremacy Post-tsunami
It is highly disgraceful to find the tsunami relief issue now acquiring politico-economic dimensions, especially when emergency relief materials, like food and clothing, are not being followed up with long-term relief like re-building of infrastructure and permanent rehabilitation for the homeless. China is reported to deliberately send less relief, to continue receiving international economic support. Also, USA has increased its relief pledge tenfold to virtually save her face in the international community. India, concerned with her territorial security, is keeping a close eye on the presence of US military personnel for relief work in Sri Lanka. One can never be certain of India's abilities to provide adequate long-term relief to her own affected areas. But still India is spending huge amounts towards relief work in Sri Lanka. In this case, other than the obvious humanitarian motive there seems to be the additional motive of gaining more and more popularity in the SAARC region. Thus the woeful waves have not only brought about untold devastation, it also seems to have brought in its wake, a struggle for supremacy among the developed as well as some of the developing countries – a meanness which is utterly shameful.
