Crass Commercialization Killing Conscience
It did not take much time for the Peeping Tom syndrome to reach Kolkata from Kharagpur IIT. One the one hand, the law is being reshuffled to empower women with the right to work in late night shifts, and on the other, women's privacy is being intruded upon. And what is even more shocking is that voyeurism is being commercialised. This is perhaps a fall-out of the gripping present day cultural revolution ushered in by remix music videos, sleak Bollywood skin-flicks, internet porn and the like. These are the obvious offshoots of economic globalisation, allowing a primarily conservative cultural setup to be overwhelmed by the superficial gloss of consumerism. The cure has to be found not in the penal codes but in the human conscience.
